I knew that I personally would love this film before going as a fan of Katy Perry. It brought back good memories of going to her concert last year (which was amazing!). But even people who may not be big fans will be able to enjoy this. Unless you really can’t stand to listen to her music because obviously it’s featured. The film is really compelling. It tells you were Katy came from and how she really struggled for a long time to be successful and was not over night. It also chronicles how while at the high of professional success someones personal life can become strained. Ultimately the film show’s that Katy is a fighter and someone who perseveres through hardships and is a hardworking human being who loves what she does because she is being true to herself.
Mattison’s Merit- Inspirational and touching. Teaches you something new about yourself. Like a memory of your first time eating gelato in Italy. You’re familiar already with ice cream but when you have that first lick of strawberry, lemony frozen buonismoness you feel like you too can conquer the world.
Safety Not Guaranteed
Ok, I don’t want to be rash here, but this may be my favorite movie so far this year (definitely in my top 5) and I have seen quite a few flicks so far. Safety Not Guaranteedtells the story of a writer and two interns for a magazine looking to write a story about a man who posted an ad in a newspaper looking for someone to travel back in time with. This humor was spot on with a cast that is brilliant at portraying the relationships that develop between real people in often surprising ways. I could not speak highly enough of this film. See it if you have the chance to do so people!
Mattison’s Merit- When you go to a small local restaurant for the first time and don’t know what to expect but your chocolatey, ice creamy, and amazingy dessert blows you away that’s like this film.
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
This movie just has something entirely tacky about it overall. I’m not sure what it is exactly. The movie kept me entertained with pretty much non-stop action and vampire killing from start to finish but most of the emotions involved were no more than hinted at with a quick pace. Anything that could potentially have packed any sort of real emotional punch was glossed over in favor. While this movie probably won’t leave you bored it doesn’t offer much beyond that.It is quite unabashedly all about the action which it tries to portray as less than vapid. Yeah it’s that kinda film.
Mattison’s Merit- Like a buffet down the street. Lots to look at but nothing really tastes great.
Snow White and the Huntsman
Charlize Theron is such a good villain. She played the part of the evil queen perfectly. Alas she wasn’t enough to save this film. Chris Hemsworth as the huntsman and every other actor in the movie outshines Kristen Stewart. I’m not saving she’s horrible. But she’s just Jr. High School play good. She had some good moments but ot strong enough to hold a movie and the fact that Snow White is supposed to be more fair than the evil queen just made the whole thing seem implausible because she wasn’t. The whole journey of the film lacked flavor. It was a meandering vehicle for special effects but was in need of help in creating a real emotional connection. You know a film has gone wrong when it has you rooting for the character that is more or less pure evil and that’s what I was doing.
Mattison’s Merit- Pizza that has been made to look fancy for commercials by food artists but tastes like cardboard.
Prometheus
The strength of Prometheus lies in it’s performances. Noomi Rapace’s Elizabeth Shaw is someone who believes in what she believes and is earnestly seeking scientific answers on a journey to a far off world. Charlize Theron’s Meredith Vickers plays a tough bad ass who through the events of the film, reveals her motives. Michael Fassbender’s David is an android who is remarkably human and wants to be recognized for his accomplishments like anyone else yet the performance is so well done that you know he is still at his essence, not like the rest of us. Visually the film gives you a lot to enjoy as well and hints at things. Every question brought up may not be answered but unlike some who saw this film I did not feel like I needed all the answers especially in light of how the film turned out.
Mattison’s Merit- This movie was satisfying and yummy. Like many foods it took a number of parts to make it amazing visually and tastually like this soup that my dear cousin Megan makes (it looks beautiful in real life. Sorry bout the photo quality people):
Dark Shadows
This was one of those that I wanted to like. I really did. I like Johnny Depp. I like Tim Burton. I like Michelle Pfeiffer. And I like Helena Bonham Carter. However the pieces just don’t add up. There are some clever and random parts to this movie (references to macrame increase the funny of anything I’m pretty sure). But more often than not this film is confusing in a not good way as when that lady on Law and Order was a lesbian all of a sudden.
Mattison’s Movie Merit- Like going to Grandma’s for dinner and the food being less than delicious. You eat it to be nice but it just doesn’t taste good when it comes right down to it.
The Pirates! Band of Misfits
This pirates movie will appeal to adults and children alike who are willing to be open to it. The animation style - stop-motion- may not be quite as hip as that of most other animated films now days but it works and you’ll enjoy this film if you go to it. The humor is clever and multifaceted. The characters, are all very much that.
Mattison’s Merit- Like one of those Popsicles with a bunch of colors. It is fun and sweet and worth having despite not being life changing.
The Avengers
The Avengers is a cinematic delight. All lovers of action, super heroes, and well told stories will enjoy this film. It is full of humorous and clever moments. The effects and action are really neat too. The 3D is well done and enhances the story. The cast is exceptional. Mark Ruffalo is a welcome addition and is sublime in his portrayal of Bruce Banner. The script does a good job of giving the cast relatively equal amounts of time to each of the different main characters. It’s a smart action movie and you’ll like it. Go see it.
Mattison’s Movie Merit- A 16 oz. rib eye steak of deliciousness with a side of steamed broccoli, mashed potatoes, and for dessert a big ice cream sundae.
The Secret World of Arrietty
This film was a subtle and nuanced delight. Many people will not want to see it because it is anime but don’t be a filmist. Go to this movie. You will not regret it. The characters, although animated, are as rich and multidimensional as in any movie you will see. Without ever feeling pretentious or spitting it’s themes in your face you see a beautiful story of friendship, change, youth, life and even death. The film’s story is simple and a fun movie that people of all ages will be able to appreciate and enjoy. The world and culture of the borrowers was deftly displayed. This is going to be the one to beat come next years race for the Best Animated Feature Academy Award
Mattison’s Movie Merit- One of those delicious, most rare of chocolates that children with sweet toothe’s and old ladies who lust after the most rare cacao can both appreciate.
